Donald Trump has appointed Bo Hines, a former college football player, as the Executive Director of his administration's newly established "Crypto Council." The announcement came on December 22 via a post on Trump's social media platform, Truth Social. Hines, who ran as a Republican candidate for North Carolina's U.S. House seat in 2022 but lost, will now lead the Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets, focusing on the growth and innovation of the digital assets industry.

In his new role, Hines will work under David Sacks, Trump's pick for crypto and artificial intelligence czar. Together, they aim to foster growth within the digital assets space while ensuring that industry leaders have the necessary resources to succeed. Trump emphasized the importance of the Crypto Council in promoting innovation within the sector, which has seen increasing interest and investment in recent years.

Hines, though unsuccessful in his 2022 congressional bid, has maintained strong ties to the cryptocurrency industry. His campaign was backed by the American Dream Federal Action super PAC, along with other pro-crypto PACs. Notably, former FTX CEO Ryan Salame, who is currently serving a prison sentence for various crimes, reportedly contributed millions of dollars to Republican candidates, including Hines. This support highlights the continued influence of the crypto sector in U.S. politics.

In addition to Hines, Trump also announced the appointment of Sriram Krishnan, a former general partner at Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), as the senior AI policy adviser for the Crypto Council. Krishnan expressed his honor at serving the country and ensuring the continued leadership of the U.S. in AI, working alongside David Sacks to shape the future of both artificial intelligence and digital assets in America.

These appointments reflect Trump’s ongoing support for the crypto industry. During his presidential campaign, he pledged to make the U.S. "the world capital of crypto," drawing significant funding from top crypto executives. Additionally, on December 4, Trump nominated Paul Atkins, a pro-crypto businessman and former SEC commissioner, to chair the SEC, signaling his administration’s intent to reduce regulatory pressures on the crypto sector.
