India has embarked on an ambitious journey to democratize access to computing power with its "IndiaAI Mission," aiming to bolster nationwide artificial intelligence (AI) development. The Federal Cabinet, approving the mission with a preliminary budget of 1,030 billion rupees (approximately $1.24 billion), seeks to nurture AI startups and foster innovation over the next five years.

Announced by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, the initiative aims to provide convenient computing resources to innovators, startups, students, and educational institutions across the country—a pivotal step in advancing AI development and implementation. The mission, structured around public-private collaboration, aims to cultivate India's AI innovation ecosystem systematically.

The IndiaAI Mission encompasses seven key components, including the democratization of computing power and local large-scale multi-modal models (LMMs), facilitation of access to high-quality non-personal datasets, and the development of AI applications. It also entails the establishment of artificial intelligence education programs, financial support for deep-technology AI startups, and the implementation of safeguards surrounding AI advancement. Under the initiative, an artificial intelligence computing infrastructure comprising 10,000 or more graphics processors (GPUs) will be deployed to furnish essential resources to AI startups formed through public-private partnerships. Moreover, a focus lies on fostering AI education and ensuring the progress of AI remains secure.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Indian Minister, announced the launch of the IndiaAI Mission, underscoring its significance in propelling India's AI landscape forward. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Cabinet's approval, emphasizing its role in empowering AI startups and expanding computing infrastructure to position India as a global AI innovation hub.

Recognizing the potential of AI to spur economic growth and generate high-skilled employment opportunities, the Indian government remains committed to fostering AI development. However, amidst this push for AI advancement, the government issued a directive on March 1, mandating technology companies to obtain approval before releasing new AI tools. The move aims to ensure regulatory oversight and prevent misuse, particularly concerning electoral integrity, with general elections anticipated in summer 2024.
